On July 8–9, 1947, as commander of the Eighth Air Force, identified the material flown in from Roswell as a weather balloon carrying a radar-tracking reflector and displayed the debris for press photographers in his Fort Worth office — the statement that withdrew the previous day's "flying disc" announcement.
